Herb Information:

Common Name: Yarrow

Botanical Name: Achillea millefolium L.

Plant Family: Asteraceae

Overview: Yarrow is common in North America, but is native to Europe and Asia. It grows in stalks during the summer months, with a height dependent upon seasonal rainfall. When it is a dry year, the stalks normally only grow a foot or two, to preserve energy in the roots. Yarrow's Latin botanical name "Achillea" came from the legendary Greek hero Achilles. In Greek mythology, Achilles's mother dipped him into the river Styx, held by the ankle, thus making his entire body invulnerable side from the ankle, which never touched the river. Being a great warrior, Achilles fought several battles, and used Yarrow to treat the wounds of his fellow soldiers.

Magickal Uses: Courage, love, marriage charms, dispelling negativity, psychic abilities, divination.

Medicinal Uses: Intensifies the medicinal action of other herbs taken with it, helps eliminate toxins, staunches blood flow.

Parts Used: Dried stems, leaves, and flowers.

Precautions: Not for use in pregnancy. Persons with allergies to other members of the Asteraceae family should exercise caution with yarrow, as allergic cross-reactivity is common in Asteraceae plants.

Herbalism is the study revolving around the use of various plant parts to create natural medicine, along with hundreds of other products including infusions, tinctures, and Salves! In addition, many plants can be used to fragrance products, give items and foods natural color, and more.

Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have been studying exactly which plants could be used for particular ailments. Thanks to modern science, researchers have been able to dive into the biochemistry of many botanicals and observe which chemical elements are present within them, as well as how they react in (and sometimes on) our bodies.
